European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001, known as RED II, is part of the regulatory package aimed at combating climate change. In its objective to ensure that at least 32% of gross final energy consumption in the EU comes from renewable sources by 2030, it establishes highly stringent sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions saving criteria.

At Ibero Waste, specialising in the international trade and supply of sustainable raw materials, by-products, and waste fats primarily destined for the production of second-generation biofuels, our products strictly comply with RED II guidelines. We currently work with an extensive network of suppliers around the world who provide high-quality products.

From Used Cooking Oil (UCO) to glycerine, as well as soapstocks, acid oils (oleins), and advanced feedstocks, Ibero Waste’s products fit perfectly into the renewable definition pursued by RED II. This is because, unlike biofuels that compete with agricultural land destined for food production—such as palm oil—they fall into the category of processing waste and residues.

Furthermore, for a biofuel to be accepted under RED II, it must demonstrate significant savings in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. In this regard, the use of UCO or soapstocks reduces the carbon footprint massively, given that the environmental impact of producing the original raw material was already allocated to its first use—in this case, food.

At Ibero Waste, we work with voluntary certification schemes officially recognised by the European Commission. To comply with RED II, we require and guarantee a watertight chain of custody—meaning we know exactly which restaurant or factory a batch originates from. This ensures materials have not been adulterated and certifies transparent mass balances across all international logistics.
